Inspiration

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

I just returned from the End Violence Against Women International conference in Chicago Il.  The conference was three days, but I had the honor and privilege of spending five days with a group of people that inspire and encourage me to continue in this field that is often heartbreaking.

I met with both men and women that are working to change the way the world responds to sexual violence.  It would take hours to list all of the influential leaders that were in attendance.  I am awed by the fire that is still in these men and women that have been doing this work so much longer than I have.   The unbreakable spirit of the survivors that have the courage and strength to share their story inspires me to work harder to make this world a bit safer (or at least improve the system).

This conference has left me exhausted, but inspired to push harder and work longer.  Change cannot exist without individuals taking the steps to MAKE it happen.  Thank you to all that started this movement so many years ago and continue to work and in your spare time mentor me (and others like me). You inspire me!

What would you do?

If someone tells you they were the victim of sexual violence, what would you do?  I challenge you to Start By Believing. www.startbybelieving.org

The Starfish Story

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

A man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy pick something up and throw it into the ocean.  He asked the boy, “What are you doing?” He replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. Otherwise they’ll die.”  “Son,” the man said, “there are hundreds of starfish.  You can’t make a differenc!”  The boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.  Smiling he said, “I made a difference for that one.”     (Thank you to the folks at EVAW for sharing The Starfish Story. Keep this in mind when you get frustrated and want to give up.)
